A Note About Labeling!
We often use the term ‘scam victim’ in our articles, but this is a convenience to help those searching for information in search engines like Google. It is just a convenience and has no deeper meaning. If you have come through such an experience, YOU are a Survivor! It was not your fault. You are not alone! Axios!
A Question of Trust
At the SCARS Institute, we invite you to do your own research on the topics we speak about and publish, Our team investigates the subject being discussed, especially when it comes to understanding the scam victims-survivors experience. You can do Google searches but in many cases, you will have to wade through scientific papers and studies. However, remember that biases and perspectives matter and influence the outcome. Regardless, we encourage you to explore these topics as thoroughly as you can for your own awareness.
Statement About Victim Blaming
SCARS Institute articles examine different aspects of the scam victim experience, as well as those who may have been secondary victims. This work focuses on understanding victimization through the science of victimology, including common psychological and behavioral responses. The purpose is to help victims and survivors understand why these crimes occurred, reduce shame and self-blame, strengthen recovery programs and victim opportunities, and lower the risk of future victimization.
At times, these discussions may sound uncomfortable, overwhelming, or may be mistaken for blame. They are not. Scam victims are never blamed. Our goal is to explain the mechanisms of deception and the human responses that scammers exploit, and the processes that occur after the scam ends, so victims can better understand what happened to them and why it felt convincing at the time, and what the path looks like going forward.
Articles that address the psychology, neurology, physiology, and other characteristics of scams and the victim experience recognize that all people share cognitive and emotional traits that can be manipulated under the right conditions. These characteristics are not flaws. They are normal human functions that criminals deliberately exploit. Victims typically have little awareness of these mechanisms while a scam is unfolding and a very limited ability to control them. Awareness often comes only after the harm has occurred.
By explaining these processes, these articles help victims make sense of their experiences, understand common post-scam reactions, and identify ways to protect themselves moving forward. This knowledge supports recovery by replacing confusion and self-blame with clarity, context, and self-compassion.
Additional educational material on these topics is available at ScamPsychology.org – ScamsNOW.com and other SCARS Institute websites.

[COMMENT REDACTED FOR VIOLATING SCARS POLICY ON HATE – AUTHOR IS BANNED FROM FUTURE COMMENTS]
I have been scammed by someone calling themself Sidney Jennifer using some of the same photos listed here. I was led to believe that she had an ailing aunt that needed surgery but didn’t have the money needed for the procedure. I was skeptical at first, but she kept pleading with me that it was genuine. I gave in out of the goodness in my heart and sent a bunch of money. She promised that she would pay me back with money she invested in Bitcoin, but has kept putting it off claiming that there are fees to be paid. I finally decided to do some background checks (something I should have to begin with) and found this through Tineye.

I’ve been talking to Nice Natasha real name Tatiana laurent for almost a month she claims she loves me told me stories she was in London now in her home abroad California it says she 34 year’s old she told me she 29 in July social media WhatsApp and Instagram?
It is an obvious scam. If you have not sent any money to her, just report the fake profile to the platforms and block the fake profiles.
If you have send money, then do the say thing, but retain any evidencce and report the crime properly to your local police and national agencies.
Thank you very much for your help I reported and blocked.
My husband has been talking to her for months. She supposedly made him millions on bitcoin. He went to where she said she lives NOW (Spartanburg SC) 4 hours away to have “her” ignore him on WhatsApp. She told him she was taking $300,00 out of her account and was giving him $200,00. Needless to say, he had to beg money from me to get back home. She called him on WhatsApp on his way back begging him to not turn her over to the authorities. I cant convince him this is a scam…that this person isnt Tatiana Laurent. He says he saw her on video chat and has a screen shot of her ID proving its her. I dont know what to believe anymore other than hes getting scammed and its ruining our marriage.
You have very few options because he is in the eyes of the law and adult.
One option is to sit down with him and watch this: https://youtu.be/4hBSKqsFJO0
You should also be contacting a divorce attorney to explore your options.
Have you reported the scam to your local police? You can contact us be email also at contact@AgsinstScams.org
It’s not enough to point out that internet celebrities(be they porn stars or rock stars) likenesses are being used to scam people. Anyone’s likeness can be used, if there are enough pics available to allow the Criminal enough jpegs and video to have a versatile selection of free pics.
Look for the SIGNS the person is fake
1. They are out of the Country on vacation or business
2. They have a small child, or an elderly person they care for and text about during your exchanges
3. They ask if you live alone
4. They use terms or phrases that seem unusual today(dear, petrol, Mami, pappi)
5. They message you either very late at night or very early in the morning
6. Messages are responded to very slowly when they are having a dialogue, sometimes an hour between replies
This is literally happening to my room mate right now, and I cant seem to convince him that this is all one big scam, apparently ‘she’s’ sent him thousands of dollars, and vice versa, on some soccer betting thing or whatever? I dont know, but he’s blowing so much money on these scams, and this isn’t the first time its happened either…
Is your room mate a partner, or just a co-resident? The question is really how much you care about the person. Here is information you can use to help them: https://romancescamsnow.com/dating-scams/for-family-friends-article-catalog/
Ultimately, you have to view this as the addiction is really is, and understand that like an addict, you can only do so much unless they want help.
