Four Liberians Arrested For Defrauding Koreans In Online Romance Scam
Another Cartel Shut Down!
SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) — South Korean police have arrested four Liberians for defrauding more than 30 South Koreans of nearly 1.3 billion won (US$1.15 million) after posing as American military officers, officials said Tuesday.
South Korean Police Have Arrested Four Liberians For Defrauding More Than 30 South Koreans Of Nearly
1.3 Billion Won (USD$1.15 Million) After Posing As American Military Officers, Officials Said Tuesday.

A photo provided by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency on Dec. 11, 2018, shows cash seized from arrested Liberians.
The Liberians are accused of mobilizing a romance scam by approaching South Korean men and women on social media sites and pretending to look for marriage or business partners, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency said.
Romance scams involve feigning romantic intentions toward a victim, gaining his or her affection and then using that goodwill to commit fraud.
The Incheon police agency said a fifth Liberian has been booked without detention in the same romance scam case.
The Liberians have been staying in South Korea to apply for refugee status.
The unidentified five Liberians are suspected of having swindled 1.28 billion won out of 34 South Koreans, whom they met on Facebook, Kakao Story and other social media sites, from Dec. 7 last year to Oct. 4 this year.
The suspects posed as male American military officers to female Korean victims and as female American military officers to male Korean victims, police investigators said.
As the relationships grew, the suspects proposed business partnerships or marriage before committing various frauds, they said.
A spectacular arrest this does show that the Koreans are in the game for real too!

FAQ: How Do You Properly Report Scammers?
It is essential that law enforcement knows about scams & scammers, even though there is nothing (in most cases) that they can do.
Always report scams involving money lost or where you received money to:
- Local Police – ask them to take an “informational” police report – say you need it for your insurance
- Your National Police or FBI (www.IC3.gov)
- The SCARS|CDN™ Cybercriminal Data Network – Worldwide Reporting Network HERE or on www.Anyscam.com
This helps your government understand the problem, and allows law enforcement to add scammers on watch lists worldwide.
