# Money Recovery Scam Simulator

A SCARS Institute text adventure · RomanceScamsNOW.com

## Please Read Before You Begin

This is a text adventure about money recovery scams, in which criminals contact people who have already lost money to a scam and promise to get it back, for a fee. Each scene tells you what is happening, and you choose what to do from a list of answers. There is nothing to type and no time limit.

**This simulator contains distressing material.** It includes:

- A story that begins after a large loss to an earlier scam.
- False hope, mounting fees, borrowing, and threats of arrest.
- Criminals impersonating real police, government agencies, lawyers, and other professionals.
- A moment in which the character feels ashamed and hopeless.

**For survivors.** If you have lost money to a scam, or to a recovery scam, this simulator is likely to bring up painful memories. Consider playing it with a trusted person or your counselor, or skipping it entirely.

A **Take a Break** button stays at the top of every scene. Use it any time to pause or end the simulator. This simulator saves nothing and sends nothing, and the money in it is make-believe. The agencies and professions named in the story are impersonated by criminals in real life; they are not involved.

If you are in crisis right now, or have thoughts of ending your life, please do not play. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call your local emergency number.

I understand what this simulator contains, and I want to continue.

## What Did You Lose Before?

## Who Offers to Help?

Tip: on a keyboard, press the number beside an answer to choose it.

Pause here. Nothing is lost.

This story is only a simulation. No money is at risk, and you are safe where you are right now.

Try this for a minute: press your feet into the floor and notice the ground holding you. Look around and name five things you see. Breathe in slowly, then breathe out even more slowly, three times.

When you feel steady, return to the story or end it here. Both are good choices.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the United States, or call your local emergency number.
