Scams or confidence tricks exploit victims using their credulity, naïveté, compassion, vanity, irresponsibility, or greed and exploiting that. Researchers have defined confidence tricks as "a distinctive species of fraudulent conduct ... intending to further voluntary exchanges that are not mutually beneficial", as they "benefit con operators ('con men' - criminals) at the expense of their victims (the 'marks')". RomanceScamsNow.com has completed a new survey of scammer victims and others through its website www.RomanceScamsNow.com. The survey ran from February 1 to February 7, 2016, and included over 1,000 responses from site visitors. Site visitors that participated in the survey were asked five basic questions:

  4. Are you willing to pay an investigator to identify the scammer even if it cost just US$100.00?
  5. Are you willing to help support anti-scam websites like this one?

It is clearly a unique situation where victims are so unwilling to do anything active to help control the level of crime in this case, and so unwilling to spend as little at $5 after they have lost $1000s.
